Be sure to get a rain barrel diverter or learn to install it on the water rain barrel that you build. A rain barrel diverter attaches to your existing downspout gutter system and funnels the rainwater into your waiting water rain barrel.

Use food grade barrels if you plan to drink the water in an emergency (filter or treat it first!). Also, a filter in the diverter is nice to have to keep the water clean. Keep the system closed to avoid breeding insects.
